About 40%-50% of women experience hair loss in the first to fifth months after Pregnancy. Telogen effluvium is the Latin name for the excessive shedding of hair occurring in these months following the end of the pregnancy. Since normally, 90% of our hair is growing at any time, and 10% is in resting phase, and each resting hair falls after 2-3 months of being in a resting phase, during the excessive shedding period, more hair falls than usual. However, like most conditions related to pregnancy, this type of hair loss is temporary.
Why does this happen after pregnancy?
|
During pregnancy, the female body produces high levels of Estrogen to help the growth and health of your baby and of you! This increased level of Estrogen causes more hair growth by sending signals to the follicles. This also speeds up your metabolism, sending more nutrients everywhere in your body, including your scalp. Many women actually experience hair growth during pregnancy, their hair appearing shiny and lustrous, but then experience hair loss after the pregnancy. This is perfectly natural and most often the changes are only temporary. When the hormone levels begin to re-adjust after the birth, the excess hair grown during the pregnancy falls out. Some women recover quickly from the hair loss, and some find that it takes longer to re-grow the hair lost in the months following delivery. It is, however, very uncomfortable, during a very sensitive period for new mothers. Hormones are raging, and many women are experiencing post- |
