Hair cloning is not true "cloning" but rather tissue engineering or cell therapy. It is a process of hair multiplication that creating many hairs from a single hair follicle for hair restoration. Cells divide, so one cell becomes two, two become four and so on, resulting in large numbers of new cells. That means from an original sample of around 10 hairs containing 100,000 hair follicle cells, several million offspring cells could be injected, resulting in several thousand new hairs.
Most people may not even need hair multiplication and the current technology can be used to completely restore their hair. However, hair cloning may be needed for severe hair loss conditions when patients don't have adequate donor hair.
Hair follicle cloning or hair multiplication represents the future of hair transplantation. It is probably not as far away as one might think and It might be ready for use with hair transplant procedures as soon as five years from now, or even sooner. In terms of cost of hair transplant procedures using cloned hair, some people believe that hair transplant grafts using cloned hair would be about the same cost as the usual hair transplants that are available today. Other experts believe that the price will be much higher - perhaps three or four times per graft higher - because of the specialized methods required to do the work.
