The Fitzpatrick classification system for skin typing is developed to Thomas B Fitzpatrick, MD, PhD of Harvard Medical School in 1975. The Fitzpatrick skin type was based on a person's response to sun exposure in terms of the degree of burning and tanning the individual experienced. For successful removal of hair, wrinkles, veins, sun spots, and scars using LASER technology, it is necessary determine your correct skin type.
Now, We raised some questions to help you determine the skin type. Answer the questions and calculated the scores to determine your Fitzpatrick skin type:

| Skin Type | Image | Typical Features | Tanning Ability | Effectiveness for Laser | Score | |
| I |
![]() |
Pale white skin, blue/hazel eyes, blond/red hair, freckles or Albino | Highly sensitive, always burns, never tans. | Laser hair removal will be
most effective on skin type I. The type I of skin
absorbs the least amount of laser light, so a relatively
high amount of energy can be used to hair follicles.
This results of laser hair removal in an extremely
effective and painless treatment. Common device : Diode ; Alexandrite ; Ruby |
0 - 7 | |
| II |
![]() |
Fair skin, blue eyes | Very sun sensitive, burns easily, tans minimally. | Laser hair removal will be
very effective on skin type II. The type II of skin
absorbs very little laser light, so a relatively high
amount of energy can be used to hair follicles. It resulting in excellent
permanent results of laser hair removal. Common device : Diode ; Alexandrite ; Ruby |
8 - 16 | |
| III |
![]() |
Darker white skin Example: Darker Caucasians, European mix |
Sun sensitive skin, sometimes burns, slowly tans to light brown. | Laser hair removal of dark
hairs will be effective on skin type III. The type III
of skin absorbs more laser light than lighter shades of
skin, so the energy on some types of lasers may be
turned down somewhat to avoid damaging the skin. The
procedure may not provide permanent results of laser
hair removal for light
brown or blonde hair that is not markedly darker than
the skin. Common device : Diode Laser |
17 - 25 | |
| IV |
![]() |
Light brown skin Example: Mediterranian, European, Asian, Hispanic, American Indian |
Minimally sun sensitive, burns minimally, tans to moderate brown. | The skin type IV absorbs a
relatively large amount of laser radiation,
consequently, they was not traditionally treated by lasers.
From 2001 year, laser designs have been developed that allow effective treatment of dark hair on skin types IV and darker (types V and VI). A few more visits might need to be scheduled to make the hair removal / reduction truly permanent. If you are currently tanned (even with tan-in-a-can) you should wait before having any laser procedures. Common device : Diode Laser |
25 - 30 | |
| V |
![]() |
Brown skin Example: Hispanics, Afro-American, Middle Eastern |
Sun-insensitive skin, rarely burns, tans well. | The skin type V and VI absorbs
more laser radiation than other types of skin,
consequently, was not traditionally treated by lasers. Common device : Nd : YAG Laser |
Over 30 | |
| VI |
![]() |
Dark brown or black skin Example: Afro-American, African, Middle Eastern |
Sun-insensitive, never burns, deeply pigmented. |
